Three blocks, one bathroom

This bathroom is resolved entirely in Oyster White, a white marble with very dynamic grey veining. It did not come from one block: three were selected, one per element, because the figure that suits a washbasin is not the one that suits a full-height wall.

The washbasin is a large-format monolithic piece that extends towards the shower, with a single bowl and a floating edge. In a piece like that the block rules: the vein has to run through the volume and turn the corner without breaking, and that is decided before sawing.

The shower back wall is clad and backlit with dimmable light. Oyster White lets enough light through for the vein to draw itself from behind: lit, the wall catches in pinks and greens that are invisible in full daylight. It is the use that best explains why a white marble is not a plain surface.

The walls are opened in bookmatch: the slabs are cut as mirrors and the figure closes in symmetry, forming a centred shape that holds the wall with nothing else on it. This is where choosing the block shows most, because two slabs that do not match are visible from the doorway.

Oyster White answers throughout the house — flooring, cladding, kitchen, bathroom and outdoor work — and is one of the few white marbles in the collection that take a worktop. Here it stayed in the bathroom, and from three blocks: that is the difference between a marble bathroom and a bathroom made with marble.
