Two stones, one room

This bathroom is resolved with two marbles chosen to be opposites: Silver Stream on floor and walls, and a totem basin in Calacatta. One moves a great deal and the other settles things, and placed together each does what the other cannot.

Silver Stream is a grey marble with heavily moved black veining that folds over itself like ground seen edge-on. It is laid as cladding on floor and walls and opened in bookmatch: the slabs are cut as mirrors so that the figure closes in symmetry instead of colliding at the joint. Across a full-height wall that movement fills the whole surface and asks for nothing else on it.

The basin is a totem carved from a solid block of Calacatta, a white marble of clean, well-drawn veining. It is not a top on a cabinet: it is a single piece, made to measure, and that is why the vein runs through the volume and turns the corners without breaking.

The choice is not only aesthetic. In front of so graphic a wall, a piece with similar figure would disappear; the white of the Calacatta cuts the volume out and lets Silver Stream work as a background. The matt black taps and the indirect perimeter light are there for the same reason: to mark the edge.

Silver Stream goes in flooring, cladding, bathrooms and outdoor spaces. A solid basin like this one is made to measure in any marble in the collection: the block is chosen, the cutting is planned before sawing and the piece is installed on site.
